GEE Q: FROM BEATS TO PURPOSE

ASC - Koi Texture

Gee Q’s path to working with Asian Solidarity Collective began with his own search for purpose. As a teenager, he turned to music—first as a rapper, then as a storyteller behind the scenes. It wasn’t just about expression. It was about survival, identity, and the need to carve out space where none existed. Over time, his artistic journey deepened. He didn’t just rap—he started learning how to shoot videos, produce content, and manage artists. After spending his own money hiring others to help him record and edit, Gee Q made a decision that changed everything: he taught himself. Not just to save money, but to fully understand and own his craft.

It was at a back-to-school event that Gee Q met Lon Chhay. The two quickly bonded over a shared vision: using art and storytelling to uplift the AAPI community and create meaningful change within community. When Lon invited him to join ASC as a multimedia mentor for youth, Gee Q saw it as a powerful opportunity—to build the kind of space he once needed himself, and to pass that opportunity on to the next generation.

Now, as an instructor with ASC, Gee Q offers more than just technical training—he helps youth discover their voice, deepen their cultural pride, and channel their creativity into lasting growth. Whether teaching DAW software, video editing, or music production, he encourages participants to create content rooted in their own stories and identities. By rapping in Vietnamese and centering cultural representation in his work, Gee Q challenges stereotypes and helps break down cultural shame. For him, music isn’t about chasing viral fame—it’s a tool for empowerment, healing, and long-term opportunity.

This work doesn’t come without sacrifice. Like many grassroots leaders, Gee Q often supports the program without compensation. The financial strain is real. But so is his commitment. He continues to invest in ASC because he believes in the power of youth, in the strength of community, and in the future they can build—together.
