Due to the current pandemic climate we are all under we have decided to extend the deadline for submissions.  In the meantime, we will be reviewing our guidelines to make the submission process smoother.  We will make an announcement of the new extended submission deadline with new submission guidelines soon.  Thank you for your patience.

Asian Solidarity Collective proudly announces our very first Youth Creative Art Scholarships for youth ages 14 - 18 years old.  A total of 4 youth scholarship recipients will be selected and $250 will be presented to 1 person from each creative art category as listed below.  

 

The 4 youth scholarship recipients will be announced and featured along with their work at our yearly Yuri Kochiyama and Malcolm X Celebration/Fundraiser in May 2020. Submission Guidelines will be posted by the end of the week on our website.

Please read the submission guidelines thoroughly and follow the instructions to ensure you submit your piece appropriately.

Youth of color, Black, Brown, Indigenous, LGBTQ, non-binary,

What is the age requirement for the Youth Creative Art Scholarships?

 

14 years old - 18 years old

 

What is the amount of the Youth Creative Art Scholarships?

 

All participants will be featured on our website as long as it meets with our principles.  You can view our mission and vision on our website here.  Asian Solidarity Collective’s (ASC) Youth Creative Art Scholarship Review committee reserves the right to determine which submissions align with their shared vision of Collective Liberation to select the 4 scholarship recipients.

$250 will be presented to 1 person from each creative art category; so a total of 4 youth will be selected.  The 4 youth scholarship recipient will be announced and featured along with their work at our yearly Yuri Kochiyama and Malcolm X Celebration/Fundraiser in May 2020.  The 4 youth scholarship recipients will also receive additional offerings such as Swag Bag, Lifetime membership with ASC, Opportunity to perform at another community event, an interview with Hip Hop Bruha Podcast, and Social Media Announcements.  

Who are the Youth Creative Art Scholarship Review Committee? 

 

A committee of local San Diego artists and community organizers will be asked to join the review committee who will determine the 4 scholarship recipients.  The names of the committee will be announced in April.

 

What does the application and submission require?

                                           

To assure that your entry submission efficiently gets accepted; all participants should follow these exact steps:

  1. Fill out and submit this Youth Creative Scholarship Submission Form

  2. Upload and submit your creative art submission/piece onto the Submission Form.

  3. Upload and submit your Artist Statement onto the Submission Form which should include name, title of submission piece, and a description (3-5 sentences) of creative art submission/piece and how their piece conveys a message of Collective Liberation.

  4. Sign and upload both the Image & Media Recording Release AND the Media & Creative Art Work Release Forms onto the Submission Form.

By submitting an entry, youth participant accepts and agrees to comply with these guidelines:

 

  • All creative art submissions must convey a message of what Collective Liberation means to the participant/artist.  

  • All submissions must be original work that has never been previously published, screened, filmed or performed.  

  • By entering a submission, all youth participants and their parents give Asian Solidarity Collective (ASC) permission to use their names and submissions on ASC’s website, social media pages and all other forms of promotion and marketing for the Youth Creative Art Scholarship program and Asian Solidarity Collective. 

  • Only one participant per submission.

  • No co-authors or co-artists in any submissions

  • Each participant or Parent/Guardian of youth participant must sign both the Image & Media Recording Release AND the Media & Creative Art Work Release.  Minors (under the age of 18) who appear in photographs/videos/audio must have a parent/legal guardian sign their release; subjects 18 years and older can sign their own release form.

  • Each participant agrees that if they are selected to be a recipient, they are required to showcase/display or perform their submission at Asian Solidarity Collective’s Annual Malcolm X & Yuri Kochiyama Fundraiser & Gala in May 2020 (date and location to be announced) in early Spring 2020.

 

Each category has a different submission requirement in order to fit the art medium theme. Here are the submission requirements for each category:

 

    • Written Word:  Essays, poetry, research, short story, scripts, etc.

      • Must include an artist statement of your piece that states your full name (along with artist  name if you have one), your age, title of your piece and a description (3-5 sentences) of how your work conveys a message of Collective Liberation.

      • All written submissions must be typed and include a cover sheet with name, address, phone number, email address, the title of their piece, age and parent/guardian’s name.

      • All written submissions must be typed and use a standard font (such as Times New Roman), 12 point size, double spaced with standard margins.

      • Poem submissions can be of any style but at least be a minimum of 3 lines and a maximum of only 26 lines.

      • All essay submissions including short story, op-ed, research, must be no more than 1000 words; this is a maximum word count of 1000 words.

      • All play script submissions are a maximum of 10 pages

      • All entry submissions must be uploaded onto the Youth Creative Art Scholarship Submission Form.

    • Visual Art:  Video, Photography, Short Film, Short Documentary

      • Must include an artist statement of your piece that states your full name (along with artist name if you have one), your age, title of your piece and a description (3-5 sentences) of how your work conveys a message of Collective Liberation.

      • All films including short films and documentaries must be under 5 minutes.

      • All video entries must be submitted via a secure URL link. (ie: youtube, vimeo, etc with private links) onto the Submission Form. Should you be selected as a scholarship recipient we will ask you for the original video and/or a public link of the videoPlease note, if you change this link or any of your login information prior to April 1, 2020 without contacting Asian Solidarity Collective your film may become ineligible for consideration.

      • Photography submissions can include a maximum of 3 photos which can be uploaded onto the Youth Creative Art Scholarship Submission Form.  It will not be necessary to upload the highest quality/largest size of your digital images during this early process but you should expect that ASC may ask you to provide the highest quality/largest size during review process and/or should you be selected as a scholarship recipient.  

      • Download and sign Media & Creative Art Work Release Form: Please include a signed copy of ASC's Media Release Agreement with your media and/or creative art work submission. This agreement verifies that you own the photos and/or video.  It allows ASC to use your submission photo(s) or video(s) (including any photos/videos of yourself) in print and digital formats.

      • Model Responsibility Agreement:  Filmmakers and photographers must also sign the model responsibility agreement which states participants are responsible for all model releases for all recognizable people in each photo or video.  You can find this agreement on the 4th and last page of the media release forms.

      • Technical guideline:

        • It is not necessary to upload the highest quality/largest size of your digital images during this early process but you should expect to provide the highest quality/largest size during the reviewing stage and/or during the showcasing of scholarship recipients (should you be selected).

    • Mixed Media: Painting, Drawings. Sculpture, Graffiti, Printmaking, Ceramics, woodcarving, digital art, jewelry, textile arts, art glass, crafts, papermaking and more.

      • Must include an artist statement of your piece that states your full name (along with artist name if you have one), your age, title of your piece and a description (3-5 sentences) of how your work conveys a message of Collective Liberation.

      • Submissions for this category do not need to mail out their actual creative piece during this early process but participants are required to send a quality looking digital image of your piece along with an artist statement that includes a description of your piece which should be uploaded in the Youth Creative Art Scholarship Submission Form.  However, during reviewing stages we may ask for you to send us the original piece. 

      • If your submission is selected it is a requirement to showcase/display your piece at the scholarship recipient announcement during our Annual Malcolm X & Yuri Kochiyama celebration in May. 

      • During the showcase of your piece you can utilize display stands, bases or any mounting devices and provide us with any specific instructions to display.  Any art work unfinished or unstable will be considered automatically disqualified.

    • Performance: Song, Hip Hop/Rap, Dance, Spoken Word, DJ, Short Monologues,

      • Must include an artist statement of your piece that states your full name (along with artist name if you have one), your age, title of your piece and a description (3-5 sentences) of how your work conveys a message of Collective Liberation.

      • All performance pieces must be original written and/or produced work created by the performer/participant.

      • All performances must submit a video or audio recording of their performance under 5 minutes.  Recordings do not have to be professionally produced but must be a good quality.

      • All audio recordings must be submitted via a secure URL link (ie: soundcloud, etc with private links). Should you be selected as a scholarship recipient we will ask you for the original mp3 and/or a public link of the audio recording.  

      • All videos must be submitted via a secure URL link (ie: youtube, vimeo, etc with private links). Should you be selected as a scholarship recipient we will ask you for the original video and/or a public link of the video.  Please note, if you change this link or any of your login information prior to April 1, 2020 without contacting Asian Solidarity Collective your film may become ineligible for consideration.

 

Once you have submitted, you will receive a confirmation email from Asian Solidarity Collective within 48 hours. This email will confirm that your film and/or photo(s) has been submitted correctly. If you do not receive this email within 48 hours, you should follow up by email (asiansolidarity@gmail.com) to ensure your submission has been submitted properly and is under consideration.

All applicants will be informed of the status of their project no later than April 30, 2020.
